Transition in Progress
The single-story urban city residence organizes around a private enclosed courtyard allowing for extensive floor to ceiling large opening glass panels; focusing on a secluded garden and plunge pool.
Although the project house looks like a typical rambler, it is not; anymore.
An innovative structural design system converted almost all interior walls to non-bearing walls; Removing the walls to created the large expanse of space. Lowering the main floor created the loft above. Operable skylights in the loft flooded both levels with natural light and fresh air when appropriate.
An 'Urban Edge' plan was implemented removing all glass along the street sides and creating glass walls on the south and west side, adjoining the private courtyard. To soften the urban edge, a series of ginko trees were planted in a peristyle arrangement the entire length of the property and boulevard.
A series of large, opening sliding skylights designed in low profile, face east, south, and west to further add natural light and air.
Function of all spaces are simply designated by level change of a few low rise steps. The only exception being the loft which involves eight steps. All spaces are configured to embrace the private and natural environment of the enclosed courtyard.
